The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to the entire human race, severely impacting the global economy, private sectors such as trade and business, government machinery, education, and health. Countries with weaker economies are being pushed into complex and sensitive situations, exacerbating economic crises. In this challenging environment, information technology (IT) has played a crucial role, providing substantial support, although financial disparities have hindered its full benefits.
Despite the adversity, IT has proven to be an essential backbone, facilitating daily life and aiding in COVID-19 prevention efforts. It has enabled real-time information sharing, which is crucial for timely interventions in the health sector. From testing facilities and laboratory operations to contact tracing and social distancing during isolation, IT has facilitated collaboration between governments and healthcare providers.
In our context, the health app introduced by the Ministry of Health has provided informative messages, daily updates, and self-assessment tools, highlighting the indispensable role of IT. Technologies such as robots, camera drones, and others have also contributed significantly to healthcare facilitation. Home delivery of medicines based on online information, real-time report generation, and the growing use of artificial intelligence in healthcare point towards a promising future for techno-medicine.
The pandemic has also reshaped education, with the shift to online classes. Students and teachers have become more reliant on IT, although the cost of online education remains a concern. Remote work has become feasible for many businesses, enabling participation in meetings and seminars from home. This shift has fostered a culture of self-study and research, with significant use of platforms like Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.
The surge in online business and e-commerce has motivated many sectors to embrace digital transformation. In a country like Nepal, which is experimenting with new technologies, the current usage of IT provides a foundation for future advancements. Our increased focus on technology today suggests that what we envision for the next 5-7 years is already becoming possible.
In summary, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, information technology has emerged as a crucial tool, driving significant advancements in various sectors and providing a glimpse into a more digital future.
